The Graham Norton Show tonight on BBC2

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

The Graham Norton ShowThe BBC is clearly determined to get their money’s worth out of star Graham Norton. The cheeky chappie is not only hosting I’ll Do Anything, the search for musical theatre performers to fill the roles of Nancy and Oliver in a new West End production of Oliver!, every Saturday night, but also returns to his chat show on BBC 2 tonight at 9pm. This twelve week run kicks off with the Irish host getting to grips with film actor Kevin Bacon and the Hollywood legend that is Tony Curtis. Swedish pop star Robyn will be performing her new single Who’s That Girl? (isn’t that an 80s Madonna song?) and as always we can expect the outrageous antics that made the show such a hit back on Channel 4.

For those of you that really love the show, why not nab yourself some tickets to go see Graham grill celebrities? If you’re able to get down to the London Studios on the South Bank and are free on Wednesdays, then visit the Standing Room Only website for further information on how you could be in the studio audience. For the rest of us, relive some of Graham’s most naughty moments on the BBC official website.

Fool’s Gold at cinemas tomorrow

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

After the UK and Stateside success of Katherine Heigl’s 27 Dresses, it seems that Hollywood might have finally regained its passion for passion, with another rom-com set to delight audiences on general release this weekend. They proved a winning combination in 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, so Hollywood stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have reunited for Fools Gold. The film is a mixture of high adventure, goofy comedy and playful romance and sees the perma-tanned pair cavorting about in very little clothes – a perk for fans of both stars!

McConaughey plays Benjamin ‘Finn’ Finnegan, a treasure hunter whose obsession with striking gold ruined his marriage to Hudson’s Tess, yet the pair are thrown together again as clues for the elusive 18th Century Queens Dowry promise untold riches. Also on the hunt is Finn’s nemesis played by one of Britain’s reliable bad guys for hire, Ray Winstone. The film is frothy fluff full of sun, surf and silliness but for those of you depressed by the gloomy weather and in need of a romantic getaway, why not?

The trailer is below, while for further information visit the film’s official site.

21 number one at the UK box office

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

21 film posterIt was all change at the top of the UK box office last weekend, with the Las Vegas gambling film 21 nabbing the top spot. The film, starring Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey, had performed well in the US and with over £1.6 million earned in three days, it’s repeating its success on this side of the pond as well. Katherine Heigl rom-com 27 Dresses fell to number three with feel-good Brit film Son of Rambow holding steady at the number two spot.

Despite plenty of press attention, George Clooney couldn’t inspire his sports comedy Leatherheads to the top, with the film coming in at a disappointing number six. Other new entries in the top ten include the Rolling Stones documentary Shine A Light at nine (the soundtrack is also performing well in the UK album charts) and the creepy Pathology starring Heroes tottie Milo Ventimiglia at number ten. Natalie Portman to star in new Wuthering Heights

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Wuthering HeightsJane Austen seems to be having a renaissance lately, with films and television frequently returning to her work, but apart from the BBC’s adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre a few years back, things have been rather quiet on the Brontë front. This is all about to change however with Ecosse Films announcing plan to produce their version of Emily’s tempestuous classic romance Wuthering Heights, reports the Hollywood Reporter. Assuming the role of the wild and unruly Catherine is Natalie Portman, fresh after perfecting her English accent in The Other Boleyn Girl.

The script will be written by Olivia Hetreed (Girl With a Pearl Earring) and the film will be directed by John Maybury (responsible for the upcoming Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller flick The Edge of Love). There is no news on who will play Heathcliff opposite Portman, though it is bound to be a casting decision that attracts plenty of attention and comment. So over to you readers - who do you think can master the earthy ruggedness, devilish charisma and ruthless aggression of Brontë’s hero? Leave a comment below to cast your vote.

Pushing Daisies starts on ITV1 on Saturday

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Pushing Daisies logoITV really do seem to be upping their commitment to American imports of late (Dexter, Gossip Girl, etc.), with Pushing Daisies the latest show to make the trip over the Atlantic. Heavily promoted by the network and enjoying a primetime Saturday night slot (9pm), Pushing Daisies has received great critical acclaim in its homeland having been nominated for three Golden Globe awards and was considered by many critics the stand-out new show of the season. It is a comedy/ drama with a lyrical, whimsical quality akin to a modern day fairytale or a happier Tim Burton offering.

Like many current American shows, it stars one of own in a central role – ex-Brookside actress Anna Friel. Anna stars as Chuck, the childhood sweetheart of Ned (Lee Pace), who is murdered. Thankfully, Ned has the ability to bring people back from the dead with just a single touch – phew. Perversely though, once resuscitated, Ned can never touch them again otherwise they die for good – a serious drawback when he and Chuck rekindle their love. Add in lots of spontaneous singing, offbeat humour and quirky charm and ITV could be on to a winner. Check out the official site for more details.

Lark Rise to Candleford on DVD

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Lark Rise to CandlefordLark Rise to Candleford has only just finished its run on BBC1, yet already the popular Sunday-night show is available to buy on DVD. Based on the classic Flora Thompson story, the ten episode period drama follows the daily lives of a colourful cast of characters in nineteenth century Oxfordshire. Young Laura (Olivia Hallinan) takes centre stage, a rural girl raised in small village Lark Rise who is taken under the wing of the independent and spirited post-mistress Dorcas Lane (a fantastic Julia Sawalha) in nearby town Candleford. As Laura comes of age in this new environment, her loyalties are divided between her roots and her future.

This four-disc edition of the hit programme might be light on special features, but it is rich with warmth, gentle humour and lovable characters. The show was a surprise hit for the Beeb, regularly attracting audiences of six million and it is easy to see why it proved so popular. For your slice of rural life, grab a copy of Lark Rise to Candleford available from Amazon.co.uk for £25.98.

Trailer for Leatherheads out this Friday

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

If we were to say Gorgeous George, who would you think of? Immediately your mind journeys back to memories of Dr. Doug Ross in ER, the suave Danny Ocean in Ocean’s Eleven and the two-time winner of People’s Sexiest Man crown. George Clooney sets hearts a racing like few other current male celebs and yesterday he exposed London to a little of his old-school charm. George was in town to attend the premiere of his new movie Leatherheads (and talk with Prime Minister Gordon Brown about the situation in Darfur), a film that opens in UK theatres this Friday.

Co-starring ex-lady friend Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski (from America’s version of The Office), Leatherheads is the third directorial outing for Clooney and is a romance, old-fashioned screwball comedy, underdog tale and sports movie all rolled into one. It might sound an unlikely mix and with the focus on American football, the 1920s-set film might not sound like a crowd-pleaser. Thankfully, there is far more to it than jocks in helmets with Clooney’s goofy antics reminiscent of his turn in Coen’s classic O, Brother Where Art Thou? Get your Clooney fix with the trailer below or visit the film’s official site for more information.

Monster on Channel 4 tonight

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Monster posterPractically unrecognizable beneath the false bad teeth, grotty skin and extra pounds, South African actress Charlize Theron forgot her model roots to portray serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Oscar voters love when a natural beauty turns ugly for a role and that combined with a controversial true story helped Theron bag the Best Actress gong. She brings incredible depth to her depiction of prostitute Wuornos, who after a childhood dogged by abuse and drugs, developed an appetite for murder after killing a client in self-defence.

This film, from writer/ director Patty Jenkins, adds depth and insight into Wuornos’ troubled state of mind as she explores her lesbian relationship with the young and impressionable Selby (Christina Ricci). An intense and dark film, Monster provides a rare opportunity for female talent before and behind the camera to shine and really excel. Watch Monster tonight on Channel 4 at 10pm or for more information, see the Media 8 Entertainment website.

New cinema releases this weekend

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Awake film posterIt’s another quiet week at the cinema for new releases, as Katherine Heigl’s rom-com 27 Dresses currently proves a silver screen success. However, for those of you looking to venture out to your local multiplex this weekend, there are a handful of new films for your consideration. The most high-profile of these is the much publicized Awake. Starring Star Wars’ Hayden Christiansen and The Fantastic Four’s Jessica Alba, the thriller explores the medical horror of awaking during your own surgery.

Aiming for a younger crowd is Never Back Down. The film comes light on star names but with its high school setting and underdog story (outsider takes on bully in fighting, similar to The Karate Kid), could prove a winner with audiences. On a more serious note is the creepy Funny Games, starring Naomi Watts (The Ring) and Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs) as a couple held hostage on their holiday, while comedy fans might prefer Son of Rambow, a light-hearted, British homage to the Stallone starrer. For more information on these films and all the weekend’s new releases, head on over to IMDb.

Season 3 of Criminal Minds on Living tomorrow

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Criminal MindsThe digital channel Living has a strong reputation for acquiring top-notch American imports and tomorrow night sees the return of one of their most trusted heavy-hitters – ‘Criminal Minds’. The crime drama returns at 9pm for its third season, though frustratingly this clashes with Channel 4’s glossy new show ‘Dirty Sexy Money‘ (episode 3). The team is back to solve more tricky cases through psychological profiling, with a campus serial killer providing this week’s action.

This season received much industry attention speculating on the future of leading star Mandy Patinkin (grumpy behavioural expert Jason Gideon), after he reportedly failed to turn up for the show’s production. But for those loyal fans keen for their CM fix, rest assured that the show did go on with new face Joe Mantegna (The Simpsons’ gangster Fat Tony.) To learn all about CM, head on over to the Living website.
