Bluetooth Mirror

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Bluetooth MirrorThe Bluetooth Mirror Hands Free Car Kit (bit of a mouthful!) allows you to chat away without having to take your hands off the steering wheel. So what’s so great about this gadget that makes it stand out from the rest? The Bluetooth Mirror clips over your cars rear view mirror and not only will your phone connect automatically when you start your engine but you are able to see who is calling by the number being displayed on the mirror – I love the idea.

The gadget fits any Bluetooth phone and works with all Bluetooth cellular networks so there are no wires involved and it incorporates a microphone and speakers too. You are able to answer, reject, end, redial or adjust your speaker volume by simply pushing a button – wherever your phone is in the car.

It’s a bit on the pricey side at £99, but worth it for the geek factor! Available from Gadget Box.

The Drivemocion

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

The DrivemocionTraffic … how I hate it, but imagine how much better it would be if you could communicate with the cars behind. Now you can, with The Drivemocion – yes it’s pretty geeky but it would definitely either let you vent your frustration to the car behind, or allow you to send little messages to a friend following you.

Simply fix the display module to your rear windscreen and use the remote control in the front of the car – it’s just a shame the car behind can’t respond as theirs would also be placed on their rear windscreen. Perhaps that’s for the best though if you’re not sending a polite message! And from only £13 at au-my.com, these traffic emotions are a bargain.

After going to purchase one it looks like they’re out of stock at the moment though, these things must be popular! I’ve just seen the different messages you can have (the more you have the more expensive it becomes), which include a smiley face, a sad face, Thanks, Back Off and Idiot – Brilliant.

41 Hotel

Ok so I promised that I was going to “rediscover london” this weekend by taking advantage of lastminute.com’s offer on entrance to Buckingham place and afternoon tea at the Atheneum – well does spending the weekend in a London hotel count as resdiscovering London? – I honestly went there with the intention of going to the palace but it was just too wet! Anyway I did discover a nice boutique hotel. It’s called 41 and with only 20 rooms and 4 suites it’s really for the elite. It’s on Buckingham Palace Road so it’s a stones throw from some of the best attractions – yes, like Buckingham Palace – and a great location for shopping in Oxford Street, Mayfair or Knightsbridge. This five star hotel has an impressive library style lounge complete with roaring fire and an open bar which you can help yourself to and pay for via an honesty box. The hotel offers four suites which are spilt level with the dining area on the bottom floor leading up to a large sleeping area with state of the art entertainment equipment. Thoughtful extra touches such as chocolates on pillows and strawberries by the bath tub set this hotel apart, but the most impressive feature of the grand suite was its glass ceiling, which must be nice on a clear day!

Wicked the Musical in London

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Wicked the MusicalThe Broadway hit musical Wicked is now showing in London at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. The storyline follows the witches from the classic story the Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. In the film the storyline concentrated on Dorothy and her journey through Oz with the lion, scarecrow and tin-man however the other side of the story wasn’t told until now. This time the focus of the story is on two young witches called Elphaba and Glinda and we follow their battle between good and evil. Wicked has already won 15 awards including a Grammy and three Tony awards plus excellent reviews from a number of top newspapers.

What’s even better is that ASOS.com is currently holding a competition to win VIP tickets for you and a friend to attend the premiere of the show. The prize also includes an invite to the after party show and a stay in a 4* hotel. All you have to do is sign up to ASOS’ newsletter to be in with a chance of winning. Not bad eh.

Miss Sixty opens Sixty Hotel

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Miss Sixty HotelMiss Sixty opens a hotel. Yes that’s right, a hotel owned by a fashion label – what next, McDonalds selling clothes? I’m not 100% convinced about this, but it does look funky. Apparently the hotel has web cams installed in the rooms and is ‘a place for people who use a hotel not just for sleeping and having breakfast’ – I guess Sixty Hotel has it’s own unique edge!

So it doesn’t give off the impression of a classy place to me, but it is stylish – the overall design was overseen by Studio 63, who are the people responsible for the interiors of the Miss Sixty boutiques.

According to the Sixty Hotel website, this is just the first of a chain of 4* hotels. This one is located in Northern Italy – rooms will apparently be in the price range of 120 and 180eu excluding breakfast.

Rediscovering London

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

Buckingham Palace

All my life ive lived close to London but I have never visited some the major attractions like London Zoo and Madam Tussauds. I think I must be really missing something seeing as so many tourists come especially to see these famous attractions. So, as of this weekend, im going to promise myself that I am going to visit London once a month and experience some of the things right under my nose and report back to you on the most interesting attractions and the best value for money days out in London. Buckingham place seems like a good place as any to start. I’ve just found a good deal on www.lastminute.com. for only £30 you can get admission to Buckingham Place including, state rooms and gardens (usually 14 pounds) and champagne afternoon tea at the newly refurbished Windsor lounge of the 5 star Athenaeum Hotel (usually £28 pounds). I’m going to be there this Saturday stuffing myself, in the most elegant manor possible, with scones and cucumber sandwiches.

Weekend at the Waldorf=Astoria

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

If you are going to NYC for the first time this is the place you must stay to complete your New York experience. There are trendier and posher hotels in New York but this one just has so much character. Stepping inside you are reminded of what the city must have been like in its golden age of the 20s and 30s. In the entrance lobby is a stunning art deco mosaic floor and impressive chandelier – the cocktail terrace is the place to have afternoon tea and watch the Waldorf residents go in and out.

I stayed in the towers where the rooms are the size of the average NY apartment and furnished very well, most with excellent views of Park Avenue and the Chrysler building. Even if you book a smaller room you are very likely to be upgraded if there is enough space, especially if you tell the hotel that you are celebrating a special occasion. A common complaint about the Waldorf is that the décor is a little shabby, In my opinion this adds to the charm of the place, it would be criminal if they decided to completely modernize the rooms in a hotel with this much history. The hotel location is excellent for Park Avenue shopping and a stones throw from Broadway, and some great restaurants. The hotel food is of the standard you’d expect from one of the most famous hotels in the world and room service is excellent. I’m kicking myself for forgetting to order a Waldorf salad while I was there – oh well next time!

VIOLight Toothbrush Sanitiser

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

VIOLight Toothbrush SanitizerPersonally I’ve never given much thought to the germs on my toothbrush – I’ve obviously been spending too much time thinking about other things? But if you’re the type of person who has given this some thought (or if you have some kind of obsession with germs), this new Toothbrush Sanitiser is a must-have.

Apparently, thousands of germs can remain on your toothbrush, even after a thorough rinse, which creates the potential for harmful bacteria to grow. This gadget sanitizes your toothbrush and prevents contamination build-up – if you didn’t have an obsession with toothbrush germs you probably will have now!

I must admit that this does actually appeal to me now – especially to take on holiday. It’s always a bit disgusting to pack your toothbrush among the cottonwool and shampoo and then give it a quick rinse before use – now you can ensure you don’t have bits of cottonwool stuck in the bristles (not to mention the crusty old toothpaste from your previous use). You simply place your toothbrush in the battery operated case and the UV light will get to work.

The bulb lasts for up to 1000 hours and the UV bulb automatically shuts off after the sanitation cycle is complete. You can purchase your own for £29.85 from Magellans.

Kempinski Hotel Grand Hermitage

Kempinski Hotel Grand HermitageThis gorgeous hotel is located in Golden Sands Bulgaria and I am waiting patiently to book my plane ticket back out there. The hotel is by far the best I have ever stayed in – the building is luxurious both inside and out and the staff are friendly and accommodating to your needs. The bedrooms are absolutely huge, decorated in modern patterns and the bathrooms are extremely grand. Food around the hotel is great and not over priced considering the hotel is 5*. The hotel is in a perfect location, right on the strip of Golden Sands and only a few minutes walk from the beach.

I visited the Kempinski with my boyfriend in June after managing to find an amazing deal through Thomson’s website. We paid £324 each for a package deal that included flights, one week’s accommodation and breakfast. If you go during off-peak season and you shop around you can probably find a similar deal. However, prices are set to rise in the next few years so get in quick.

I loved Bulgaria as a country and also loved the cheap food and drink prices. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. Find more information about this hotel at Blog Your Travels.

Sleep in the City

Canary Wharf Four Season'sIf you find yourself needing to stay overnight in London a great place to stay is the Four Season’s hotel in canary wharf. This hotel is only a 15minute tube ride from the bustle of central London but is strangely tranquil. The views of the river from most of the rooms, the private garden and the amazing rooftop indoor swimming pool with panoramic views of the Thames and the hotel help to create the city paradise atmosphere. This five star hotel is really contemporary and has a great feeling of space. You can choose from a range of rooms, from the presidential suite to a standard room. The best value for money is probably the executive suite, which has a lounge a large bedroom and two bathrooms! There is an excellent restaurant which serves great scrambled eggs and a classy bar area with outdoor terrace which attracts all the cool canary city traders.

Canary Wharf is an ideal place for a night stay if you are working financial east London or the city, or even if you are in London for the theatre or shopping. There is small modern shopping centre in the centre of canary wharf and plenty of restaurants and bars so you don’t even need to venture into central London if you don’t fancy it.
