Are You Miss Write?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Are You Miss Write?I’ve always dreamed about writing a book. Imagine the life… getting up whenever you like, wearing your comfy pyjamas, escaping to a fantasy world in your mind, and then getting paid for your thoughts, sounds good to me! Well I’m pretty sure it’s not really that simple but the idea of writing a book really does appeal to me. If you’ve always fancied yourself as the next Jackie Collins then get yourself over to Cosmopolitan’s website and enter their competition (in conjunction with Waterstone’s) to produce the next bestseller.

The competition ends on 31st May so you best get your thinking cap on and dust off your laptop if you’ve any chance of winning, but it can be done. All you need to do is send a synopsis of your story and the first 3,000 words of your novel along with a mini biography of yourself. It’s chick lit they’re after so nothing too factual or dull! The winner will get themselves a publishing deal and their book will feature as Waterstone’s offer of the week! What a fab opportunity to get yourself recognised.

The Size 00 Hype

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Super Skinny Me LogoLast time I looked in a magazine I saw the phrase ‘Size 0’ used in a number of cases, however that now seems to be overshadowed by the phrase ‘Size 00’. Celebs such as Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth and Lindsay Lohan were all apparently a 00 at one point – the same size as a 6 year old. Many criticised their unhealthy figures and thankfully they have all put on a bit of weight and look ‘normal’ again.

The first time I heard someone use the words double zero was in a documentary I watched last week ‘Superskinny Me: The Race To Size Double Zero’ where 2 girls Kate and Louise raced to get down to a size 00 from a size 12. Even though I watch these documentaries I think they are becoming a little monotonous; first Dawn Porter, then Louise Redknapp now Kate and Louise. It was worth watching as it showed in more detail than the other programs how bad the situation can get; Kate had to stop her diet because she had purposely purged twice and doctors feared she was developing an eating disorder. Louise however, managed to succeed and then put it all back on while on a two week holiday in the Caribbean!

If you get the chance to see it, I would; it does point out some interesting facts such as ‘it is estimated that women who diet spend an average of 31 years trying to lose weight’ and that ‘one in five women who diet are permanently on a diet’. If however you saw any of the previous ‘Race to Size 0’ documentaries you may find it a little repetitive.

Retrieve Lost Text Messages (And Spy!)

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

TextSpyIn my opinion this little gadget could be extremely dangerous! If you’re the kind of person who can’t resist checking your partners mobile then this TextSpy is likely to excite you. It claims to be able to retrieve between 10-20 of the most recently deleted texts (although this is not guaranteed as different SIM networks are capable of storing more than others) giving you the opportunity to confirm any suspicions you may have!

For £99.99 your suspicions will have to be pretty high to purchase one of these! I also can’t imagine many people paying that to simply retrieve their own lost texts – how important can they be? However if you think your partner’s hiding something from you this could be the perfect gadget to find out either way – or you could just trust them!!

Anything Is Possible

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Michelle DewberryIf you enjoyed last year’s series of The Apprentice but were left wondering how a checkout girl from Hull managed to turn her life around so dramatically, I’d recommend reading Michelle Dewberry’s autobiography. Titled ‘Anything is Possible’, it really makes you believe well.., anything is possible.

I didn’t realise just how hard Michelle’s life had been – with the loss of her sister, a violent and abusive dad, her battle with depression and bulimia – but somehow she decided she would not be a victim, rather she would believe in herself and reach her unbelievably tough personal goals. I found myself inspired by her story – if you work hard enough and believe you deserve just the same as anyone else then you can turn your life around.

Michelle believes you can be anything you want to be, never give up and you will succeed! In the back of her book are 10 tips to success – if you’re lacking motivation or want to make a career move but are too scared, give this book a read.

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Spa LightsI’ve always been more of a bath than shower girl so these Spa Lights would be perfect for me. I can just imagine cracking open a bottle of wine, turning on some music and relaxing for hours in my own private little spa … heaven.

These waterproof Spa Lights can stick to the bottom and sides of your bath or shower, or just float in the water like candles. There is a choice of Original lights (which glow yellow) or the new Colour Phasing lights (which softly change colour from red, green, blue, pink and yellow). Happy Valentine's Day

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

Valentine's Day Red RoseSo once again it’s Valentine’s Day, the day where all boyfriends are supposed to reveal their romantic side and spoil us girls rotten. Alternatively if you’re single, it’s the day that either gets you really excited about a potential new relationship or makes you even more depressed about your love life.

So what is it for you girls? Has your boyfriend surprised you with a romantic dinner for two, a bunch of red roses or something else special that you weren’t expecting, or have you received any anonymous valentines cards or gifts. Let me know – I’d love to hear your stories.

If you didn’t receive anything, I suggest you hit the shops after work and treat yourself to a new pair of shoes. This will be sure to make you happier than any man can on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine's Day Gifts

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Valentine's Day GiftsSo Valentines Day is less than a week away – if you need to drop some subtle hints then now’s probably the time to start. Don’t want to end up with another homemade card and flowers from the front garden after all.

GadgetCandy have kindly put together a line-up of glam gadgets this year – from a sexy red iPod nano to a digital photo frame that means you don’t have to stare at the same photos all day.

The valentine’s gifts range from £17 to £1000 so there’s something for everyones budget – and if the hints fail then at least you can convince yourself you deserve to buy something for yourself!

Blood Diamond

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

I have watched many films in the last year but I feel this one really deserves a mention. The plot is about a diamond specialist in New York City but the storyline focuses on how the diamonds are found and exported for the rich to buy.

Africa is in a state of chaos, the rebels have risen up against the government and are battling to change the way Africa is run but not for the better. The heartless rebels take over innocent towns by either killing or kidnapping all the civilians leaving nothing but ruins. The rulers of the rebel army are sick and twisted and take pleasure in watching others in pain or begging for their lives. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes and members’ of their family.

The story follows the fascinating adventure of father of three Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) born and raised in Sierra Leone, Africa. Solomon is kidnapped and forced to work as a slave, diamond searching in the rivers. He comes across a diamond like no other and buries it under the soil. Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) a dishonest diamond smuggler hears about Solomon and they join forces to find the diamond, get Solomon’s family back and to get Danny out of Africa.

Danny and Solomon’s love hate relationship brings unexpected twists to the film and of course Leonardo DiCaprio has a love interest – a journalist desperately trying to help the civilians called Maddy (Jennifer Connelly).

The part of the film that really got to me was the child soldiers; young boys snatched from their homes and trained as killing machines. Although I know this is only a film, there are still thousands of children in Africa forced to take on a similar role.

I came out of the cinema feeling tearful and choked as never before had I understood what life in Africa is truly like. Although you will feel completely saddened by the storyline it is definitely a film I would recommend.
