Bloc Party Bombshell

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Bloc Party - IntimacyOne of the UK’s most popular and cutting edge indie bands, Bloc Party, have surprised fans by releasing their new album early. ‘Intimacy’ is available as a download as of today with the CD release coming on the 27th October.

Despite only releasing their second album ‘A Weekend in the City’ just under 18 months ago, the band were keen for their new material to be heard. Recent single ‘Mercury’ caused a divide amongst fans and critics alike with it’s electronic influences and jumpy rhythms. However lead singer Kele Okereke claims that ‘Intimacy’ is more of a pop based album and that the band aren’t straying too far into synthesiser territory.

You can buy the download from Bloc Party’s website for £5 or pre-order the CD with the download for £10.

The band play Reading and Leeds Festivals this weekend.

Conducting Celebrities

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

The Maestro StudentsWhether classical music is your bag or not, we all love seeing celebrities making a fool of themselves, and a new show starting tonight on BBC2 does just that. Maestro, airing tonight at 9pm sees famous faces including comedian Sue Perkins, former Blur bassist-turned-farmer Alex James, and news-reader Katie Derham attempt to learn how to conduct the BBC Concert Orchestra. In the timeless elimination format, each week someone will be voted off by a panel of judges.

The winner will then perform at BBC Proms in the Park in Hyde Park next month, in front of a rather daunting 30,000 people.

The show aims to shed some light on the art of conducting, and as the celebrities demonstrate, it’s not just a case of waving your arms about and keeping time.

Catch the first episode tonight, BBC2 9pm, where the students undertake the first part of their training, a 3 week stay at ‘Baton Camp’.

Noah and the Whale

Monday, August 4th, 2008

5 Years TimeFolk-rock troubadours Noah and the Whale release their hugely lovely single ‘5 Years Time’ this week. Featuring the words ‘fun’, ‘sun’ and ‘love’ in abundance, it’s perfect listening for a summery day, or even to raise your spirits in the rain. Part of the emerging new UK folk scene, the band combine catchy riffs, gentle banjo and simple but charming vocals.

The band, from Twickenham, are currently on the festival circuit, including Summer Sundae in Leicester this Friday and Field Day in London on Saturday.

In late October they embark on their own headline tour, taking in the length and breadth of the UK, and with the current hype surrounding them, this maybe a rare chance to catch them in a teeny tiny venue.

‘5 Years Time’ is available to download from iTunes, or to buy from Amazon, where you can also preorder the album, ‘Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down’ which is released next week.

Leonard Cohen Live

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Leonard CohenLegendary singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen recently took to the stage at the O2 in London as part of his World Tour, which has now been extended and sees him return to the UK in November.

Cohen played a mammoth 3 hour set that spanned his entire career, including ‘Bird on a Wire’, ‘Everybody Knows’ and a truly religious performance of ‘Hallelujah’. At age 74, Leonard Cohen, and more importantly his voice, have aged well. Sounding as rich, warm, and of course deep as it ever did, Cohen’s voice filled the entire O2.

Leonard Cohen embarked on this tour in an attempt to reclaim the $5 million swindled out of him by a former manager, but from the way he performs you’d have no idea he’s only in it for the money.

Acquaint or reaquaint yourself with Leonard Cohen, by investing in some of his huge back catalogue available at Amazon.

Household Goodies I Can't Live Without

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

During quite a long power cut at home the other day I became increasingly frustrated that I couldn’t get anything done. I realised how lost I would be without daily use of electrical appliances and I can’t imagine living without them now. Here are some of the goodies I simply can’t get by without!

Toshiba LaptopMy Laptop – I spend a large portion of my day on this laptop, without which I wouldn’t be able to blog about my favourite things, or have a job! It’s a Toshiba Satellite and it’s light and easy to carry around. If I’d expected the power cut I would have charged the laptop fully but no, the battery had about 2% left so I nothing to watch or work on!

iPod Docking StationiPod Docking Station – also known as an Intempo Digital RDI iPod Speaker Dock With Built In DAB is one of my absolute must haves. It’s an alarm clock, radio and iPod speakers in one. The best thing about this gadget is that you can select a song for the alarm clock and wake up to your favourite tunes! The station is currently available at Amazon for £95.

Water ImpWater Imp – I live in a particularly hard water area and therefore for me a water softener is a must, we use a Water Imp and it makes such a difference to the quality. Having a shower is much more enjoyable now I don’t have to scrub the door every time I get out!!

Sky LogoSky TV – I’m sure many of you will agree with this one, once you’ve got it, its hard to let it go. It took my boyfriend ages to persuade me to get Sky but now its me that spends more time watching it and series linking all our favourite programs. Life without Britain’s Next Top Model, Scrubs and the old Sex and the City episodes seems unbearable to me now!

ghd IV StylerGHD’s – My best friend and a daily routine. Without these bad boys my hair definitely needs a paper bag! Get your own at www.ghdhair.com.

Madonna's Hard Candy album out next Monday

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Hard Candy albumIt seems that people either love her or hate her (a bit like Marmite), but here at The New Pink we are always infinitely fascinated in the latest Madonna news. Is her marriage on the rocks? How are her adoption plans progressing and how does she keep that killer bod in shape? It’s what keeps us going while there’s no new music on the horizon, but the Material Girl is back doing what she does best next week – catchy, breezy, pop tunes.

Hard Candy, the long-anticipated new album hits store shelves next Monday and features the hit single 4 Minutes to Save the World featuring Justin Timberlake. Much has been made of the Queen of Pop’s decision to adopt a more R’n’B flavour on this album, having collaborated with hip-hop heavyweight producers such as Timbaland and Pharell Williams, but regardless of who she works with – this is still Madonna. She has constantly reinvented her look and sound throughout her 25 year career and now approaching 50 she is still teaching those young ‘uns how it’s done.

Order your copy of Hard Candy from play.com for £8.95.

Nelly's new music video

Friday, April 18th, 2008

All has been pretty quiet on the Nelly front for the past few years, but the rapper returns in some style with his new single, Party People, featuring The Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie. This is the first track to be released from his forthcoming Brass Knuckles album and sees the Hot In Here hitmaker back on top form. With its catchy hook and uptempo beat, fans are already eager for it to hit their local clubs.

Taking a peek at the music video (below) Fergie looks stunning, channeling a Moulin Rouge! vibe with her trapeze swinging, while Nelly looks like he’s been clocking some serious hours in the gym. The album isn’t released until June 23rd in the UK, but if you want to be first in line, pre-order a copy from play.com for only £8.95, until then enjoy the video.

Leona Lewis' album number one in the US

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Leona Lewis SpiritLeona Lewis really is a sensation. Not content with being the first female to score a US number one single since Kim Wilde 21 years ago, the X Factor winner has also nabbed the top of the US album charts with her debut disc Spirit. The album sold over 200,000 copies on its first week of release in the States, with the former number one Troubadour by George Gait selling a paltry 59,000 copies in comparison. Talk about blowing the competition away.

This new feat from the former receptionist sees her become the first British solo star to earn the Billboard top spot since Rod Stewart did so in 2006. Fancy another dazzling Leona statistic? How’s about that the album has shifted over 2.5 million copies internationally in the last six months. Congrats to Leona and her team for insuring some serious worldwide success for a young British starlet and to the X Factor for producing someone we can be proud of. Not much pressure for last season’s winner Leon Jackson, eh?
