3 launch X-Series (flat rate mobile broadband)

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Today Hutchison Whampoa’s 3 announced a new mobile broadband service called 3 X-Series. Most mobile operators, including 3, have offered mobile internet services (charged as data rather than voice) for years now, so is this really anything new?

Well, just maybe.

3’s new X-Series tariff will offer unlimited “mobile broadband” internet access for a flat rate fee, which is much closer to the way broadband is sold to fixed line customers over the traditional copper phone lines. This will allow users to run programs such as skype, which allows free phone calls to anyone else who uses it, wherever they are in the world.

How successful X-series will be, will largely depend on what 3 charge for the service. Unlimited data packages from other operators are typically £75 a month, so if 3 come in at nearer £30 I think it could be very popular.

I’ve long argued that mobile operators who rely too heavily on voice revenues (*cough* *cough* vodafone), and who fail to diversify quickly enough could be as voice-over-ip pushes down the cost of calling to zero. So, this looks like a rather bold move by 3, who are repositioning themselves towards providing internet access instead of mobile phone calls.

If the price is right, then I could even see 3 taking a share of the home broadband market. More and more people are eschewing their landline in favour of using their mobiles to make calls while at home so why not use a mobile to provide their internet connection as well?

Stiletto Mobile Phone HolderToday I keep coming across fab little gifts that would make perfect stocking fillers this Christmas – yes it’s that time of the year again, can you believe it?! This is a fun little gift for a bezzie mate or a little princess you have to buy a pressie for this xmas who has everything else. The stiletto mobile phone holder is the ultimate way to store a mobile – it even lights up when the phone rings- how adorable (or sickly depending on who you are!)

This is fun, giggly and girly – you can never go wrong with pink fluff!

Top 10 mobiles

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

If you’re not clued up on which mobiles are currently popular, I’ve come across a great guide of the latest mobile phones that should get you up to scratch. The guide splits the phones into two categories – multimedia phones and slim and sleek phones – so you can pick the one most suited to your taste. These phones will be the top sellers in the run up to Christmas so if you need a pressie for your other half this may be a valuable resource. Included in the top mobiles are the Sony Ericsson W810i and the Nokia N93 which we have reviewed here on The New Pink already.

Sony Ericsson W850i

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Sony Ericsson W850iThis little mobile is pretty cute and ticks all the right boxes. The new W850i is a sliding design music phone that stores up to a thousand songs at a time, great if you’re on the move a lot and if you don’t have time to keep switching albums!

The phone comes in two colours, Precious Black and Golden White and is designed to look unique and stylish. It has a 2-megapixel camera with digital zoom and flash and offers video calling and high quality image sharing. High speed internet allows you to enjoy mobile video and messaging. The phone is not yet available in the UK, check out Sony’s Website for more information.

Nokia develops aeon range

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Nokia Aeon ConceptNokia is getting ready for competition in the future by seriously upgrading their mobile technology. In the research and development section of their website you will see the new aeon range; one of the concepts is shown to the left. The handsets are sleek, cool and have full surface screens therefore likely to last a hell of a lot longer with no buttons to wear down. From looking at this range it seems the future of mobile phones will be full-virtual.

With so much advanced technology around and the recent popularity of touch-screens in games consoles, I imagine these little beauties will be entering our lives sooner rather than later. Check out Nokia’s Website for more images and information.

Sony Ericsson Z710i

Sony Ericsson Z710i

You have to admit – this is a sexy phone and a sophisticated one at that. This is the new Z710i from Sony Ericsson available in Twilight Black and Metallic Sand, I personally prefer the Metallic Sand style it’s more girly and looks shinier! The mobile has a 2.0-megapixel integrated camera with digital zoom allowing high quality photographs to be taken. What’s more it supports 3D games, has a built-in FM radio and comes with a memory stick on top of the 10MB (in case you really use your phone too much).

Internet is available on the Z710i with feeds sent directly to your phone via RSS on request, push e-mail also comes as standard (e-mails to your mobile). You are also able to transfer your calendar and address book straight from your computer to your mobile using wireless Bluetooth or the USB cable provided. Have a look on Sony Ericsson’s Website for more information about Features and Specifications.

Bluetooth Mirror

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Bluetooth MirrorThe Bluetooth Mirror Hands Free Car Kit (bit of a mouthful!) allows you to chat away without having to take your hands off the steering wheel. So what’s so great about this gadget that makes it stand out from the rest? The Bluetooth Mirror clips over your cars rear view mirror and not only will your phone connect automatically when you start your engine but you are able to see who is calling by the number being displayed on the mirror – I love the idea.

The gadget fits any Bluetooth phone and works with all Bluetooth cellular networks so there are no wires involved and it incorporates a microphone and speakers too. You are able to answer, reject, end, redial or adjust your speaker volume by simply pushing a button – wherever your phone is in the car.

It’s a bit on the pricey side at £99, but worth it for the geek factor! Available from Gadget Box.

MoPods

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

MoPodIf you were interested in my post on Verballs yesterday, these MoPods will probably be right up your street. Whereas Verballs are for VoIP users, MoPods are for mobile lovers – these little characters live in transparent domes and spin or flash when your mobile receives a text or call!

These mobile accessories are pretty handy if your phone’s in silent mode – you’ll never miss a call again, perfect if you’re in the office, on a noisy train or sitting in a pub. Characters available include a kitten, penguin, devil and monster - sit the MoPod on your desktop to brighten up your day. For under £5 who can resist!

Nokia’s L’Amour Phones

Nokia's L'Amour Phones

This week, Nokia added three new models to their lineup – the 7373, 7360 and 7390. I love the soft pink colour and the tribal art decorations which cover the phones, a mixture between cute and ethnic. The features are similar to those seen on the L’Amour Collection last year, but the Neopolitan ice cream colours are far more girly than the earthy tones from before.

The Nokia 7373 swivel phone has a music/video player, a 2 megapixel camera, 128 microSD memory card slot and phone charm. The Nokia 7360 may look more basic but includes an FM stereo radio, VGA camera and 4MB of built-in memory. Lastly, the Nokia 7390 is apparently Nokia’s first 3G phone, with a music player, 3 megapixel camera and high speed steaming video calling. I just love the look of them to be honest …

Samsung D900 on Offer at Carphone Warehouse

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Samsung D900

This is definitely an offer worth peeking at if you’re on Orange and your mobile contract is due for renewal. The 12 month contract deal includes a free D900 handset, 250 inclusive anytime xnet minutes and 250 text messages with 8 months half price line rental. The 18 month contract includes 500 minutes and 500 texts with 12 months half price line rental and the Magic Number feature. Like many offers this is a cashback deal therefore you still pay £35 a month but get money back by sending Orange some of your monthly bills. The deal can be found at the Carphone Warehouse.

The Samsung D900 is a popular phone known worldwide as the ‘slimmest slider’ due to its slim body and sliding functionality. It has a 3.13 megapixel camera that enables you to take high quality photographs and videos that can later be viewed on the high resolution screen or transferred to your computer. The phone also has a TV output feature allowing you to share your pictures easily. An integrated MP3 player with an 80MB memory, Bluetooth technology and all the standard features you expect from a mobile are included.

Sony Ericsson Z610i

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

Sony Ericsson Z610iLook how shiny they are! OK so that was a girlie thing to say but you can literally see your reflection in this phone! Not only does it look pretty but it has a screen on the outside which is only displayed when the phone is in use – inspired. The Sony Ericsson Z610i is a 3G clamshell phone, (also known as the Z610 – which is a tad confusing) and has everything you’d expect to find.

A few of its features include Bluetooth, video calling, a web browser and email client, 2 megapixel camera, Memory Stick Micro Support and good MP3 player. Apparently it’s also got a Picture Blog application too – we’ll all be moblogging in no time with this phone.

According to Sony Ericsson, the phone should be available in Q3 2006, but the bad news is they aren’t sure whether this is going to include the UK – what a shame that would be. This shiny little gadget has made quite an impression on me.

Think Pink from Mobile Shop

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Think Pink...I am always looking for girly gadgets and love anything pink when it comes to mobile phones. I have just been searching around the Internet for some great offers and came across a section on MobileShop.com called ‘Think Pink’. How brilliant – a whole section dedicated to pink mobiles with some really good offers on the handsets. They currently have the Nokia N72, Nokia 6111, Samsung D800and the Motorola V3 all in pink. I’ll never look elsewhere again!

At the bottom of this page you will see a link to all their pink accessories including a number of Bluetooth headsets and clip on pink fascias. I love it that everyone’s finally catching on that girls love their gadgets too.

Pretty and Pink Nokia 6111

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Nokia 6111 PinkThe Nokia 6111 in pink is currently on special offer at the Carphone Warehouse on a contract deal with Virgin Mobile. The phone itself is free and it works out that you get 8 months free line rental. However this is applied using a chequeback offer and relies on the state of your memory. You still have to pay the £30 a month but on the 4th, 8th and 12th months you send them your monthly statement and they send you three cheques for £80. Personally I think this is a great way to save some pennies – I pay £30 a month with the contract I have now and that doesn’t include any chequebacks.

The contract lasts for 12 months and over the course of the year you only end up paying £120. The deal includes 200 anytime xnet minutes, 300 messages and 25 free prints with Photobox – what a bargain.

The phone itself is pretty cute, especially this girly pink version and it’s perfect to fit into that tiny handbag that can’t fit anything in. The phone has a 262×144 pixel colour screen, 1 megapixel camera with 6x digital zoom, camera flash and you can record up to 1 hour of video footage. All standard features such as Bluetooth, Infrared, messaging, e-mail etc. are included along with extras like games, an FM radio, memory recorder, USB and digital diary.

Samsung D800 in Pink

Samsung D800 Pink

Samsung have launched the D800 in pink so if you’re looking for a cute girly phone, you’ve found it. It may not have as many spectacular built in features as other phones I have discussed recently but it certainly is a pretty little gadget. The phone is slim and petite at just 14.9mm thick and the semi automatic slide slides the phone apart so you can access the keypad. The design is sleek and stylish – you will be the envy of everyone.

The 1.3 megapixel camera takes great photographs and records video clips as well. The large colour screen (240×320 pixels) helps you take photographs accurately and the USB port included allows easy file transfer. The D800 has integrated wireless technology that allows you to connect to equipment such as digital cameras and laptops via Bluetooth up to 10 metres away. The media player supports WWA, AAC and MP3 files and with an 80mb memory you can store many tunes. All other standard mobile features are included, for more information about them visit the Phones4U website.

Overall I think this phone is a great buy, I just wish my phone contract was due for an upgrade.
