Hairspray dominates at the Olivier awards

West End musical HairsprayHairspray was the toast of the town at last night’s prestigious Laurence Oliver Awards, picking up four prizes including Best New Musical. The show’s stars Michael Ball, Leanne Jones and Tracie Bennett all won individual awards for their performances in the 1950s set musical, while Kristen Scott Thomas (The Seagull) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Othello) picked up the awards for Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber was honoured for his long list of West End credentials with the Special Achievement Award, while Rupert Goold won the Best Director gong for his Macbeth at the Gielgud. The Best New Play was A Disappearing Number and Rafta Rafta was considered the Best New Comedy. This, the 32nd annual Laurence Olivier Awards ceremony was hosted by Richard E Grant at Grosvenor House and cemented the success of Hairspray after it picked up eight Tony awards in the US.
