I had one too! it about drove me crazy trying to figure how to open it!
I just gave it away to a friend of mine, he was very determined to figure it
out. So after reading AJ's response, he went outside and holding it straight up he not tapped but slammed one end down on the cement the top side slide off! try slamming end and then the other cause one end does have magnets! and you want to slam the end down that doesn't have the magnets!
 Hope this helps!

Ugh! I can't get this open for the life of me! I've centered the ends, but evidently my tapping isn't correct. I'm sitting here banging on this thing with a stapler. Staples are flying everywhere!
Lol. It's killing me.
Now, where am I supposed to tap? On the end or on the top? Help!

Thank you SO MUCH for the solution! I found this puzzle after years of it being in my 'stuff', of course... the solution long ago forgotten and the instructions lost/thrown. What a relief to be able to open it now! hehehehe

The puzzle drove me crazy!! The solution was so simple but took me hours to solve.
To release the metal rods:
Both sliding ends should be centered.
Tap firmly on the opposite end of the magnets.

Since you don't know which side has the magnets, you'll have to try both. On mine, the loose end was the end without the magnets.
I couldn't tap hard enough with my hand so I held the box at one end then hit the opposite end on the floor. The rods dropped off the magnet and I was able to slide the piece in my hand off.

Good luck!

Hi Abi,

The box is held secure by two magnets in each of the covers and by two small one inch long rods of metal on each side. The rods can move in the main puzzle piece along a shaft roughly twice their length. The rods are put into the grooves, the locking piece is slid on top and the puzzle box is turned upside-down so that the rods slide and make contact with the magnets. There are three ways to open the box:
1- Use a very strong motor magnet to coax the rods down, one at a time, and then slide the cover.
2- Use a small sharp object (pocket knife) to force the rods a little way down, and push the locking cover piece to prefent the rod from moving back up as you move the knife up and stard again (this will take patience and agility, but can be done - thrust me).
3- Use a sharp (but not strong) blow to disloge the rods through the action of impact.

A (very) strong magnet works best. I did do it also using a small pocket knife.

The instructions may show another possibility - I didn't get them either.
