A robot with a 'nose' for good wine

Robot with a 'nose' for good wineThe ability to name specific wines from a tiny sip, or offer a cheese to compliment the different tastes seems like a human skill to me, but apparently researchers in Japan have designed a robot with taste! Using infrared light, the robot is able to analyse the object’s chemical composition, name the brand and add a comment on the taste e.g. whether it’s full-bodied etc – sounds out of this world to me!

Hideo Shimazu, a joint leader of the robot project, says the robots could be “personalised” to recognise the kinds of wines its owner prefers and even recommend new varieties. Now this sounds appealing to me – I can just imagine sitting around sharing a bottle of wine with friends while my robot offers options on the next bottle …
