A Floating Bed!

Floating BedA young Dutch architect (Janjaap Ruijssenaars) has spent the last six years creating a magnetic floating bed – quite impressive if I compare that with what I’ve been spending the last six years of my life doing. The bed hovers over the ground thanks to built in magnets in the floor and on the bed itself – which repel each other, pushing the bed into the air. Apparently Janjaap Ruijssenaars took his inspiration for the bed from the 1968 cult film “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

The scale model alone costs $146,953, with the real thing expected to cost as much as $1,533,419 (approximately £811,288) – so not a cheap piece of furniture but imagine how impressive it would look in your bedroom. Sadly I can’t quite afford it just yet but if I should ever win the lottery, this will definitely be on my list of things to buy.

Janjaap Ruijssenaars wanted to create an object that was not dictated by gravity; “No matter where you live all architecture is dictated by gravity. I wondered whether you could make an object, a building or a piece of furniture where this is not the case — where another power actually dictates the image”, he said, and I think we can all agree that he has succeeded.

Imagine a world with floating beds, chairs and sofas– I’d be scared to fall off!
