I’m really impressed with the range of fake tanning products that are out this summer. There is as much self space devoted to tanning products in my local boots as there is to shampoo and conditioner. The products have come a long way since my first attempt at looking like a bronzed beach babe left me smelling like a curry house.
Actually ever since my first disastrous experience I’ve been a little bit scared of fake tan – you never know what its really going to look like until the next day and then its too late to do much about it. That’s why the new moisturizing products with just a little bit of tanning solution are so great for someone like me. I am naturally completely pale and a dramatic bronze tan just looks wrong. But these products create a subtle effect which you can build up in a natural way so you look and feel like you spent the week sunbathing in the Med. Because the effect is subtle and less permanent any smudges are less noticeable and easy to wash off.

I’ve tried three of the most popular brands now, Johnson’s holiday skin, Dove Energy Glow Moisturiser and L’Oreal Nutri Summer. I have to say my favourite is Johnson’s Holiday Skin, it was the cheapest, and left me with a really even tan and had a very pleasant smell. The only fault was that the tan was very light and for a noticeable effect three of four applications were necessary. Dove Energy Glow Moisturiser looked fine on and smelt great but left smears when I went in the rain! The L’Oreal was the most expensive product and was more like a fake tan than a tan/moisturiser. It left quite a deep tan on first application and smears were more apparent.
